Zebra Nerite snails
Nerite snails are one of the best ways to control algae. They are small but efficient! Unlike common snail pests, they do not reproduce in freshwater nor do they eat plants. They’re easily found in aquarium stores and cheap too!
Diet: Nerites are omnivores. So they mostly eat algae and vegetable based bits. Easy to feed.
Environment: Loves vegetation and drift wood. Do provide some hiding spots.
Optimal pH: 7-8
Care: Easy
Quantity: 1 per 5 gallon
Lifespan: 1-3 years
Size: Up to 1 inch.
Behaviour: Peaceful and won’t bother other fishes.
Pros:
⁃ Easy to care
⁃ Helps get rid of algae naturally.
- Cheap
Cons:
⁃ Produce eggs on driftwood that may be unpleasant. But eggs won’t hatch! (As shown below
⁃ Poops a lot and having too many of them can contribute significantly to the bioload of your aquarium.
⁃ Snails can escape from open top tank. Best to have a cover.
Note: Nerite snails left upside down can die as they are unable to flip themselves.
